DVD SP level. When the desktop loads, you will see at least two hard drive icons on the desktop one for your hard drive and one for the USB drive. Click on the hard drive icons to open them up and figure out which drive is which. Now find the files you want to back up and drag and drop them to the USB drive. When you are finished, shut down the system and remove the USB drive.

That is your only solution but it sounds to me that there are sector errors on your HDD test it with seatools or wdutils to see if there are any hard sector errors if any show then the drive is defective and needs to be replaced or you will see more data corruption.

If I select safe mode it goes to a blue screen that reads as the same error that the software or hardware is damaged. Advises to restart computer and remove the items from the computer. The only problem is that it does this everytime I start the computer and I cannot get into windows to take the new software I haven't added any new software to my computer.

Can you post the entire blue screen error please. I am having the same problem. Worst part is; 1. It won't start in safe mode - same error. There is a timing thing with pressing F8 that I never could figure out Marty's way is MUCH more reliable.
Once there, on the right hand side if I remember right, is "startup options" Click that and choose "restart in safe mode", or something like that--pretty foolproof. BootSafe takes the hassle out of rebooting in Safe Mode or back to Normal mode. I always keep old PS2 keyboards around for just that purpose; in fact I still use them on all my machines.
